Differences Between K-Dramas and Western TV Shows

Korean TV dramas are of course just a part of TV/Radio entertainment worldwide. While Korean and Western TV series are both incredibly popular among audiences, they are quite different in nature—between the manner in which they are written, the number of episodes, the themes, and the production methods—which makes so many people find Korean dramas so fresh and exciting.

A huge difference is the length of the series and the way it is presented. the majority of the Korean dramas usually last for one season and with 16-20 episodes. Some stories continue over a few series but not more than 2, so they can be finished quite fast. With western TV shows, series are usually spread over years and years so as Friends, or the Game of Thrones, the series lasted a long time and you need to wait a lot to see the end.

Another major distinction is the emphasis placed on storytelling. Korean dramas tend to place attention on feelings, relationships and characters. The story tends to be centered on the characters’ individual growth with their various family members, colleagues and love interests. For instance, the storylines in dramas such as Crash Landing on You are often centered on the importance of the characters’ relationships and interactions. Conversely, Western shows tend to focus on action, plot & pace, crime solving or fantasy realms such as shown in Breaking Bad.

Another point that sets them apart is romance. From Western shows that often add to the storyline using a love story that progresses quickly, Korean soaps tend to build up the romanticism slowly and from the beginning without hopping over the details. It enables viewers to bond closer to the characters and appreciate the love story better. Slow-burn romance in K-dramas is a popularity criterion.

Korean dramas are also very particular about the structure of their stories. Some of them stick to a specific beginning, middle and end within very few episodes. Writers plan everything before filming even start. While in the West the story may change on the basis of the audience‘s feedback, the number of the viewers, and so on.

Another contrast is in the aspect of cultural values and themes. K-dramas put a lot of emphasis on Korean culture, customs, culture, social values, relationships between family members. Everything looks about patronage of the elders. The strong links within the family, family duties, and relationship in community are also represented. Whereas in Western shows individualism, independence and personal freedom are more accentuated.

The production style differs as well. Hundreds of productions adopt the Hollywood style of having royalities or big name writers, cinematography of high quality, affluent fashion styling, and excellent use of background music creating a movie-like viewing experience. Some Western shows, of course, are just as lavish with high production value, states of the art special effects.

While there are differences between K-dramas and Western TV, each has its own merits and may appeal to different people. K-dramas are known for their emotional plots and ending stories, whereas Western TV shows for their long character development and varied genres. Both contribute to worldwide entertainment.
